Sancho is back. Just in time for the apricot season. I remembered a horror story from childhood that the kernels of the pit contain cyanide. Decided to searching for information.
Firstly: there is no need to confuse apricot kernel and almond. They are similar, but they are different products.
Secondly: apricot kernel contains a chemical called amygdalin, which the stomach turns into cyanide. It can be toxic in quantities and even lethal. It applies to old raw kernels.
Therefore, do as Sancho: do not abuse, eat a couple of kernels a day, and only from young apricots. Better yet, roast them before eating.
And there is information that use apricot kernel for treating cancer, but there is no good scientific evidence.
Thanx for watching the post.
